Drinking a cup of hot coffee in the morning may have become a mandatory ritual for many people. So many studies have confirmed that the habit of drinking coffee is benefical for health. However, there are still rules about how much coffee you can drink in a day. 

Rules for drinking coffee in a day 

If you rely on coffee to feel refreshed in the morning, you're not alone.

Coffee contains caffeine which can make you energized and focused after drinking a cup of coffee. 

The Mayo Clinic confirms that the safe limit for caffeine consumption for most adults is 400 milligrams (mg). This much caffeine is roughly the equivalent of 4 cups of coffee or 2 glasses of energy drink. 

Even so, there are also studies that say that drinking 4 cups of coffee per day is considered excessive. 

According to a study in the journal Mayo Clinic Proceedings, people who drank more than 4 cups of coffee daily had a 56 percent increased risk of death. 

Consumption of caffeinated drinks can also have a negative impact on children, pregnant women, and breastfeeding mothers. They should limit their caffeine intake to no more than 200 milligrams per day (2 cups of coffee equivalent). 

Even in adults, drinking coffee can cause unpleasant effects. 

Therefore, you should  limit your coffee intake so that it does not exceed 2-3 cups every day. 

Everyone's coffee drinking rules may be different 

The limit of coffee intake for most people is no more than 4 cups per day. 

However, this is an average limit that does not necessarily apply to everyone. Here are some things you need to consider. 

1. Different people, different needs

Some people can drink high doses of black coffee and still feel in good shape throughout the day. 

While for others, drinking only half a cup of coffee might make them restless and have stomachaches.

So, don't make the previous conclusions a mandatory benchmark for yourself. 

If just one cup of coffee can cause a very disturbing effect, it's a good idea to avoid coffee consumption. 

2. Health conditions 

If you have heart disease or high blood pressure, the "2-3 cups per day" rule will no longer apply. 

You may have to change the portion of coffee every day so as not to experience the negative effects of drinking coffee. 

Although there is no strong evidence that can link high blood pressure with coffee, this habit may be making your hypertension worse. 

So, discuss the rules of drinking coffee with your doctor first if you have heart problems or hypertension. 

3. Sleep patterns

Coffee can interfere with sleep, at least for most people, but getting enough sleep is very important for physical and mental health.

So, if you're tempted to brew a cup of coffee in the afternoon, look for other ways to deal with that drowsiness. For example, by walking, stretching, or drinking water.

The process of breaking down and absorption of caffeine in the body is assisted by certain enzymes. 

Genetic differences in a person's body can affect the work of these enzymes and ultimately have an impact on caffeine metabolism in the body. 

This condition, known as caffeine intolerance, is apparently very common. 

For people who can not tolerate caffeine, consumption of 1-2 cups of coffee every day can increase the risk of heart disease and hypertension. 

Drinking coffee is healthy, as long as you don't use sugar
